Long before the Haunted Mansion opened at Disneyland in 1971, Hiram Clay Kellogg built one of the first Neo-classical Victorian homes in Orange County in 1898. After his first wife died, he built a mansion as a gift for his second wife, Helen. His obsession with tall ships led him to design a three-story spiral staircase arranged around a central mast with a bottomless crow's nest. In 1921, Hiram died in the home, but Helen lived another 42 years before she died in the very same home. Presently, certain unexplained phenomena indicate that the ghosts of the Kellogg family may be actively haunting the uniquely designed mansion. During a recent school field trip, a group of children observed the sudden opening and closing of ghostly drawers in the dining room!
Hiram Kellogg's haunted mansion is one of several buildings from the 1890s situated on a spooky 12-acre historic plaza known as Heritage Museum of Orange County in Santa Ana. In the weeks leading up to Halloween, museum staff and visitors anticipate that several prominent ghosts will be creeping around the John A. Maag Farmhouse, blacksmith shop, carriage house, water tower, adobe, gold mine, citrus grove, produce farm and nature trail.
The mysterious nature trail leads to the Gospel Swamp Natural Area, a remnant of a vast marshland which stretched across the lower Santa Ana River Valley before it was paved with concrete. In the 1860s and 1870s, the swamp attracted an agricultural community of Southerners nicknamed “Swampers” or “Swamp Angels” by local townsfolk. Among the Swampers was an unusually high number of preachers who raised massive canvas tents and delivered fiery sermons to the rural farming families. It was recently reported that a ghost of a preacher materialized in the Gospel Swamp. He started to shriek and harmonize. Ghost hunters have determined that the grim grinning ghosts are coming out to socialize.
On October 7th, from 7 p.m.-9 p.m., the public is invited to gather with the ghosts at the museum. Happy haunts may be inclined to tell stories and guide visitors on walking tours of the historic plaza. A blacksmith with knowledge of the occult will make trinkets to ward off evil spirits. Krazy Kirk and the Hillbillies (from Knott's Berry Farm/Disneyland) and the Spit-tunes Barbershop Quartet will provide ghoulish musical entertainment. Oceans and Earth Restaurant will serve old-fashioned dinners. PRESALE: $25 Adults, $15 Kids (4-10 yrs. old) PRICE @ DOOR: $30 Adults, $20 Kids (4-10 yrs. old)
Even though dinner and entertainment are included, please beware of hitchhiking ghosts. This event is a fundraiser for Naturalist For You, a 501(c)(3) environmental education charity.
