LibroMobile is at it again! This time, featuring up-and-coming political cartoonists Joaquin Junco Jr., aka “Junco Canché”—watch out SanTana, Junco knows how to start up desmadre on and off the page!
Inspired by the punk rock scene and the jefe of satire cartoons, Lalo Alcaraz, Junco has had cartoons published in El Coyote Online, La Prensa News, and the Southwestern College Sun. Self-proclaimed and titled on Pocho News & Satire as a “Chicano Punk Rock Artesano,” Junco spends his days drawing references to latest unrest, like #NODAPL, the ridiculous presidential election, punk rock hair styles and finals week (all scary to most of us), all while also studying graphic design at Cal State San Bernardino, where he initially began doing freelance cartoons, and putting together zines and posters for us to buy. His comics offer a sharp view of the state and national political scene from a Chicano point of view—this chingón’s cartoons (Lalo called him “chignón” first) at the Southwestern College Sun won awards from the San Diego Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists—wait, why haven’t we featured him in the OC Weekly yet?
Anyway, while you’re walking through Noche de Altares on Calle Cuatro, turn on Broadway to also check out Junco Canché THIS SATURDAY, 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. He’ll be providing on-the-spot controversial sketches (first 25 for free!) at CSUF Grand Central Art Center and a “political plática” at 1st Saturday Artwalk, también. All of it just in time to stir up gente for the big vote on November 7th!
