Crate Digger Book Reading

If you were mail-ordering punk records during the 90s and the 00s, you probably got at least one package from Bob Suren and his Florida distro-slash-store Sound Idea—and now that Suren’s published his memoir Crate Digger, you can find out about the man behind those ads in MRR, as well as all the life (and love and death) that happened to him in between shipping out import 7”s. Crate Digger is one of those books that uses collecting and music as a frame for one human’s experience, and it serves nicely as document of what this particular moment in this particular sort of counter-underground-subculture was like before the internet blew it apart and rebuilt it from component atoms, too. Really, Crate Digger is an attempt at connection through creation—just like the best of the records that Suren was digging for in the first place.
