Forest of Tongue is Joel Jasper, J.P. Bendzinski and Zach Mabry, and locals will know that’s practically a Porch Party Records house band—or porch band? These three each have their own worthy musical projects and each help other people around Long Beach make plenty of their own projects, too, but when they come together for Forest of Tongue, it’s something explosively unique. Think ecstatically maximalist acts like Lightning Bolt, where the experience is about the sheer physical joy of performing at the limits of technical capacity. Sometimes, this band feels positively olympic. The rest of the bill is similarly ambitious, with South Bay visionary Joe Baiza performing with the Mecalodiacs, the Urinals-slash-Gang of Four style smash-and-grab post-punk trio Traps PS and Hip Priest, named for the Fall but drawing electric power straight from the early Minutemen.
