Heriberto Luna

Dec 10th • 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm • The Muckenthaler Cultural Center

From an early age, Heriberto Luna possessed a profound interest in the arts and the preservation of his cultural heritage. At sixteen years old, Luna participated in a wide range of artistic pursuits. Aztec dancing, drumming, as well as sculpture and painting set his focus on the arts. Luna’s artistic pursuits became the motivation that inspired him to persist and succeed despite the somewhat troubled environment surrounding him at his Los Angeles high school.

Luna is an accomplished muralist. Many of his murals are currently featured in the greater Los Angeles region. This includes the “Wall of Inclusion” at Central Juvenile Hall in Los Angeles. This work is of particular importance to Luna because of his partnership with nonprofit “Theatre of Hearts” which is dedicated to arts education for incarcerated youths. His work has been on display at over thirty five museums.

More recently Luna has drawn inspiration from hieroglyphic imagery in pre-Colombian art of the Americas. In an artistic statement explaining his inspiration he says; “Each figure whether a deity, warrior, or medicine man, has a story to tell that our generation should listen to.” Luna believes there is still much to learn from these figures of the past.

Luna’s exhibit will be on view in the gallery from October 27th to December 29th. A free gallery tour presented by Heriberto Luna will be available to the public on December 5th at 6:30pm. The works featured exemplify Luna’s fondness for the natural world around him as well as his respect for ancestral history. We are honored to have such an inspirational artist featured to close out the 2019 season.
