Judithe Hernandez: A Dream is the Shadow of Something Real

Feb 3rd • 11:00 am • Museum of Latin American Art

Although she’s not commonly described as a surrealist, there’s a surreal, dreamy quality in Judithe Hernandez’s art that contributes an eerie, yet calm feeling upon seeing it. Hernandez is a venerated figure of the Los Angeles muralist movement in the ‘70s, and has presented her colorful pastel murals on paper across the world in institutions like the Smithsonia, National Museum of Mexican Art, the Getty and beyond, as well as public sites like Metro Expo Line in Santa Monica, poetry books and murals. This exhibition— the first solo show by a Chicano artist at MOLAA— showcases Hernandez’s latest works on paper, and a promise an exciting dive into the evocative, vivid mind of the longtime female artist.
