Lords and Ladies in Black and White

Aug 29th • 7:00 am - 8:00 pm • Salz Pollak Atrium Gallery at CSUF

This exhibit features English Medieval and Renaissance monumental brass rubbings from CSUF’s Roberta F. “Bobbe” Browning Collection (donated by her husband, Dr. Lee Broadbent, currently in the College of Humanities & Social Sciences, and in the future to be housed in CSUF’s University Archives & Special Collections). The Late Bobbe Browning was a CSUF administrator, counseling staff, and founder of our Women’s center. She generated her extensive collection of 52 brass rubbings during a stay in England in 1964/1965 from original funerary monuments etched in brass and preserved in English churches. These monuments usually depict the deceased in the prime time of their life. The rubbings were made by applying a waxy substance over paper laid atop the monument to transfer the details of the etching. This process of creating copies from the original monuments has since been stopped due to conservationist concerns for the brasses.
