Most Authors Days are for readers. But the Fullerton Public Library and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) program at CSUF are creating a different event—an event for readers, authors, poets, editors and publishers.
On Saturday, October 27th, 20 authors, 2 publishers and an editor will be sharing their books along with their knowledge about writing, publishing, editing and illustration.
Lis Leyson will represent her husband, Leon Leyson’s book, The Boy on the Wooden Box. It is Leon’s personal story about being the youngest child on Schindler’s List during WWII. Debra Holland, Ph.D., author of the Montana Sky Series, recognized by the New York Times and USA Today as a bestselling author, will speak not only about her books, but how she self-published her way to success, and her new publishing company. John Matthew Fox will lead a writing workshop, and Craig Smith will talk about publishing.
The event is from 11:00—5:00 at the Fullerton Public Library. The panels and workshops are as follows:
Author Panel #1 from 11:00—11:45 is moderated by John Blaydes and includes: Lis Leyson, and Debra Holland, Ph.D. Also, on the panel are Dr. Ron Baesler, who shares his fictional perception of the Old Testament’s King Saul in God’s Rejected King; and Jeanette Reese, It Wasn’t Supposed to End this Way, a charming story about living with her husband and mother, both of whom died leaving her with a need to find a new purpose in life to survive her losses.
Poetry for Pleasure, Panel #2 from 12:00—12:45. Panel poets include: Veronica Michalowski, Body Landscapes; poet Fritz Von Coelln; and Natalie Graham, author of Begin With a Failed Body. Audience members can ask the poets questions, and listen to poetry readings. The audience is welcome to bring their own work, time permitting.
Fiction Versus Memoir, Panel #3 from 1:00—2:00. Have you wondered how fiction writers and memoirists differ in their approaches? These authors can tell you: John Fox, I Will Shout Your Name; Florine Miller, The Quilter’s Flu; Dr. Ron Baesler and Jeanette Reese.
Children’s Books, Panel #4 from 2:15—3:15. Let our panelists share their perspective on what makes a children’s book good: Craig Smith, author and publisher (Dockside Sailing Press), Rayleen Williams, Shirley Jordan, Fritz Von Coelln, and Curt Abdouch.
Writer’s Workshop, Panel #4: Crafting Chapter Endings from 3:30—5:00. How do famous writers end their chapters? John Matthew Fox, MFA and MA, an author and an editor will discuss the principles and techniques for chapter endings. Time permitting, you might get feedback on your own chapter endings.
Join OLLI and the Fullerton Public Library as we journey through fiction, open hearts with memoir and list to the music within poetry.
