With a little bit of DIY ethos, a “zine” puts the power of publishing in everyone’s hands! Artists, storytellers, and poets take to zines (short for “magazines”) to give voice to subcultures otherwise ignored. And they even have their own local fest! The 6th OC Zine Fest returns to Anaheim Central Library where it promises a packed event with more than 100 vendors, workshops and panels. Skill sharing sessions will show folks the art of book binding and Cal State Fullerton’s Sci-Fi Club is set to talk all about the genre in OC during a panel discussion. Sarah Rafael García, a SanTana author and founder of LibroMobile, closes out the day with her keynote address. If all the day’s events makes people forget that they’re hungry, no worries. Chicana Vegana, a local food pop-up, will keep bellies full just outside the library with its yummy (and meatless) Mexi meals! Just don’t get nacho cheese on all those cool zines!
More info from the organizer:
The hand-made publications known as zines will be celebrated at the 6th annual Orange County Zine Fest at Anaheim Central Library on Saturday, August 24.
A “zine” (short for “magazine”) is any kind of booklet or printed piece of literature, imagery or artwork that is independently constructed and self-published. The content ranges from subcultural topics to trending contemporary social issues, and everything in between.
Zine Fests are where makers and the community can discover independent publishing as an alternative form of self-expression. Attendees may browse, read and purchase materials directly from their makers from 11:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
This year’s event will feature over 100 vendors, series of panel discussions, including one on Orange County Science Fiction moderated by CSUF’s Science Fiction Club, food by Chicana Vegana and keynote speaker Sarah Rafael García from LibroMobile!
But there is one place in Orange County where you can flip through zines and take them home without having to wait for a zine festival, and all you need is a library card. Anaheim Public Library is the first in Orange County to provide a circulating zine collection. As an extension of literacy, the zine collection provides a unique opportunity for the voices of the Anaheim community to be a part of the library.
