The young Israeli conductor taking the classical music world by storm, Lahav Shani leads the Rotterdam Philharmonic in an all-Beethoven program, including the Seventh Symphony and Piano Concerto No. 5 (the “Emperor”), featuring pianist Nelson Freire.

Since winning the Gustav Mahler Conducting Competition in Bamberg in 2013, Lahav Shani has been hailed as one of today’s most promising young conductors. He assumed his position as chief conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra in September 2018, succeeding Yannick Nézet-Séguin and becoming the youngest Chief Conductor in the orchestra’s history. In the 2020-21 season, Shani will succeed Zubin Mehta as Music Director of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, and will be the orchestra’s Music Director Designate from 2019-20. He also serves as Principal Guest Conductor of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra.

Founded in 1918, the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra ranks among Europe’s foremost orchestras and is internationally known for the intense energy of its performances, acclaimed recordings and innovative audience approach. From 1930, under principal conductor Eduard Flipse, it developed into one of the foremost orchestras of the Netherlands. In the 1970s, with Jean Fournet and Edo de Waart, the orchestra gained international recognition. Valery Gergiev’s appointment heralded a new period of bloom, which continued from 2008 with Yannick Nézet-Séguin, who served as principal conductor until the 2017-18 season. The orchestra makes its home at De Doelen Concert Hall, and is also a resident orchestra of the Paris Théâtre des Champs-Elysées.
