The Who’s Tommy

Jul 19th • 8:00 pm • Costa Mesa Playhouse
Initially released as a rock album in 1969, Tommy was conceived by The Who guitarist Pete Townshend after being inspired by Indian spiritual master Meher Baba, and has been hailed by critics as an important and influential album in the history of rock music. It was soon developed into a stage musical with music and lyrics by Townshend, who also co-wrote the book with famed Broadway director Des McAnuff.  Additional music and lyrics were by The Who musicians John Entwhistle and Keith Moon.
Winner of five Tony Awards, The Who’s Tommy is an exhilarating story of hope, healing and the human spirit. The tale of the pinball-playing, deaf, dumb and blind boy who triumphs over his adversities and becomes an international superstar has inspired and amazed audiences for 50 years. Although the Costa Mesa Playhouse’s production is presented “in concert,” the entire musical is being staged, accompanied by a live rock band.
The Who’s Tommy is directed by playhouse artistic director Michael Serna and musical directed by Stephen Hulsey.  It stars Mark Torres as Tommy, with Samantha Blair, Parker Wright, Gavin Burrell, Deanna Anthony, Allie Zito, Sophia Barajas, and Ally Teeples.
“The Who’s Tommy” plays July 19 to July 28, Fridays, Saturdays and Thursday July 25 at 8pm, and Sundays at 2pm. Tickets for all seats are $25.  Reservations can be made at www.costamesaplayhouse.com or by calling 949-650-5269. The playhouse is located at 661 Hamilton Street in Costa Mesa.
