Forbidden Planet

Even without sophisticated special effects and CGI, the 1950s space classic Forbidden Planet still holds up as one of the best science fiction films of all time. Perhaps that's due to the fact it seems loosely based on Shakespeare’s The Tempest, or it features a personable robot who gets his own billing as “Robby” the Robot, or maybe that it includes a straight performance by beloved funny man Leslie Nielsen (although arguably still somewhat comedic), or Anne Francis swimming naked in Technicolor; Forbidden Planet’s continuous popularity could be a combination of all those things. Its influence on another popular space saga should tell you just how important this film is (hint: “Live Long and Prosper”). See it on Regency Theatre’s big screen, as a cinematic voyage into outer space should be experienced.
