In the world of graphic novels, there has never been someone like Jaime Hernandez, one-half of the Brothers Hernandez who revolutionized comic books during the 1980s with their Love and Rockets publication. Jaime’s Locas series has followed two Latinas, Hopey and Maggie, from their cute-as-fuck Southern California Chicano punk days to adventures on monster-filled islands to their present-day, middle-aged, Rubenesque selves, and the author has touched upon all aspects of the human condition in that span, with stark drawings that draw as easily from the comics greats (Archie, Dennis the Menace) as from cholo iconography and DIY punk aesthetics. He’ll talk with me about his career at the Fullerton Public Library as part of my “Gustavo’s Awesome Lecture Series,” for which I sit down with Latino intellectuals to discuss their work.
