Manuel Diaz's Mother Announces Evening Vigil Demanding Justice in Anaheim

Less than 24 hours after the Orange County District Attorney's office ruled the Anaheim police killing of Manuel Diaz justified, family members and about 20 other supporters protested outside the Orange County Superior Courthouse in Santa Ana this morning. Joining them were the mother and father of Marcel Ceja, whose fatal shooting by an Anaheim policeman was also recently ruled justified.

“Spread the news,” Genevieve Huizar
told the crowd. “Tell your family and your friends about a candlelight
vigil tonight at Anna Drive.”

The time for the event was set for around 6:30 p.m. at the site where her son was shot to death exactly eight months ago today.

“We're here today to tell [Tony] Rackaukas we will fight,” she said. “We will get justice. My son did not get due process. My son did not deserve to die. There's inconsistencies in that report and we will prove it.”

Lupe Diaz, Manuel's older sister, was also at the protest. She found out about the OCDA findings yesterday–not from the DA's office, though. “I was actually on Facebook and I'd seen somebody post it and turned on the news,” Diaz says. “I was disappointed but I was not surprised.

“There's not a day that goes by that I don't think about my brother. I even dream of him,” Diaz says. “I love him a lot and I do miss him everyday.”

Similar sentiments are sure to draw others to the memorial site this evening for the candlelight vigil on Anna Drive.
