Monday Munchies: Breakfast is Served!

As an avid cannabis smoker I throughly enjoy waking up early and starting my day by quickly getting as baked as possible. There’s something about the crisp morning air, and the fact that I don’t have to sit in morning traffic, that puts a smile on my face every time I light up some of the devil’s lettuce. Once I’m done with a big bowl of frosted mini-weeds, I like to venture into the city, in search of better food than I keep in my refrigerator.

When it’s too early for tacos and the weather is just right, there’s a restaurant in Downtown Santa Ana that never fails to fill me up with their classic breakfast dishes. Pop’s Cafe has been around longer than the original Nintendo, and after a quick scan of the restaurant’s interior, you can see that it shows. Relics from America’s history can be found lining every wall, and the people who eat there daily are happy to explain every inch of it. While taking in your surroundings, make sure to grab a giant mason jar full of water to replenish your fluids after the previous night’s shenanigans and ignore everything on the menu besides the breakfast options.

The biscuits and gravy with scrambled eggs and hash browns never disappoints. If you are reading this right now and thinking that I’m celebrating mediocrity, then you’re right, because that’s what good breakfast food is, mediocre. Not every restaurant needs a social media coordinator and if you feel silly trying to hashtag your hash brown in front of 70-year-old veterans, then Pop’s Cafe is doing its job right. There’s no endless mimosas, drag queen bingo or a twentysomething hostess’ from Balboa so act accordingly, and leave your tiny dog at home. Breakfast is served.

Pop’s Cafe, 112 E. 9th St., Santa Ana, CA, 92701. Open 7:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. daily.
