The National to Make Grateful Dead Album

Who knew the National was made up of Deadheads? Two years ago, the bands' guitarists, brothers Bryce and Aaron Dessner, produced indie compilation Dark Was the Night for the Red Hot Organization.
With songs from bands such as Arcade Fire, Spoon, and Grizzly Bear, it raised over a million dollars.  Now we hear that the National plans to produce another indie charity compilation…to honor the Grateful Dead.

According to the Pitchfork story, Dessner says experimental musician Steve Reich is interested, as well as newer, folky bands like Fleet Foxes and Bon Iver. He says, “We're also trying to think of unusual [acts]. Crystal Castles would be awesome.” As for the National, it could cover custy songs “Box of Rain” or “Unbroken Chain.” Guess we'll just have to wait and see… Check out a few of these clips from The Grateful Dead and The National:
