[UPDATED: Lineup Announced] Grrl Fair Already Planning for Its 10th Anniversary

UPDATE, FEB. 8, 12:28 P.M.: Over the weekend, Grrl Fair announced the lineup of bands ready to rock the event's 10th anniversary. Nine bands in total, ranging from blues and rock to mariachi music, will perform amidst feminist-themed workshops and more (to be announced) during the Grrl Fair collective's organized festivities. The women music makers confirmed for the March 12 event at the Santora Arts Building in Santa Ana are listed after the jump.

Sunny War

Mariachi Estrellas de Santa Ana

Sunny War is an exceptional musician described in a feature article by our sister paper, LA Weekly, as having “fingers like Robert Johnson's and the voice of Billie Holiday.” Long Beach's Bella Novela are a band highlighted in our Locals Only column last year as a trio ready to blow up. Those two confirmed performances alone are helping to lend credibility to the claim that this year's edition of Grrl Fair will be the “biggest and best” ever.

ORIGINAL ITEM, JAN. 19, 8:16 A.M.: Though International Women's Day is still months away, the organizing collective behind Orange County's annual Grrl Fair is already busy plotting its 10th anniversary. The March DYI riot-grrrl-inspired event is soliciting submissions on its Myspace and Facebook
pages for all the facets that make it a unique, women-centric
celebration: female-fronted bands, artists, spoken-word poets, short
filmmakers, speakers and more.

The collective asserts in a recent blog post that this year's all-ages installment will be free of charge as well as the “biggest and best Grrl Fair ever!” Last year, the event was shaping up to be just that, with an all-girl skate jam and a solid lineup up of local talent ready to rally the feminist fury before a last-minute cancellation sent organizers scrambling.

Code enforcement and permits were cited by the Santa Ana Police Department as the chief reasons as to why they would be compelled to shut down the unauthorized event at the 511 Creative Space. In response, clothing-and-culture store Calacas stepped in and hosted a scaled-down version of Grrl Fair as the bands played on.

This time around, the Grrl Fair collective has chosen the Mike Harrah-owned Santora Arts Building in downtown Santa Ana as the place to host its big 10th anniversary celebration on March 12. An early flier for the event lists an all-day program of events starting at 4 p.m. and ending at midnight. Previous locations for Grrl Fairs have included the Center Orange County and El Centro Cultural de Mexico.

Perhaps picking the Santora as the venue is strategic. Harrah himself isn't in the best position to be hectoring about permits these days, given the recent slap-on-the-wrist fines handed down by the city for his illegal signs on the building!
