56. Taquito Burrito at Cuca's Mexican Food

First-world problems abound when you're a South County resident on the hunt for inspired Mexican food. There are few places, with a handful of great plates, but nothing really compares to even some of the more average restaurants and loncheras in Central and North O.C.

One bright light is the recently-opened Cuca's in Foothill Ranch, the first local outpost of a chain from the 909. The chicken tacos dorados are on par with those at Sarinana's in SanTana and they even sell a “taco burger,” essentially a throwback bun taco for all the Naugles fans out there. But for the truly adventurous (or truly stoned), there's something even better on the menu. Say it with me now: “Taquito. Burrito. Taquito Burrito.”

The taquito burrito is exactly what it sounds like, and that's just the way we like it. Two crunchy beef or chicken taquitos are stuffed into a burrito that's already bulging with refried beans, rice, lettuce, cheddar cheese and guacamole. Think Taco Bell's Double Decker, but in a larger size and with better ingredients.

While we try and stick to authentic Mexican when possible, we can only eat so many huaraches, sopes and enfrijoladas before the inevitable craving for some good ol' bastardized American-Mex creeps up on us. Because some great mind thought to cram taquitos in a burrito, we have a new favorite meal to hit that spot.
