Showing films “shot through a queer lens,” Out at the Movies takes over the Art Theatre in Long Beach once a month, donating proceeds to breast-cancer and HIV/AIDS charities. For July, the group will feature 8: The Mormon Proposition, the controversial documentary revolving around the religion’s influence on the passing of Proposition 8 in California. Filmmaker Reed Cowan originally set out to create a movie about gay-teen homelessness and suicide in the state of Utah—but what he uncovered was the community’s deeply rooted homophobia tracing back to Mormon idealisms and a decades-long campaign against the LGBT population. An official selection by the Sundance Film Festival, this powerful film has been heralded as “a vital, important cry for an open dialogue.”
