Though he already played Friday night, Morrissey will be again performing at the UCI Bren Events Center tomorrow night. As he’s prone to do, his Mozness has a lot to say. Love it or hate it, Moz doesn’t care because, you know, he’s Morrissey and you aren’t. So far, reports from the first show, things went off without a hitch. However, that’s before you factor in that the presidential election is tonight. So, one way or another, the outspoken activist will have stuff to say about who the newly elected Commander-in-Chief is. That shouldn’t surprise anyone who’s familiar with Morrissey, and as a refresher, here are the controversies of 2016 the Mancunian-bred has been embroiled in.
Morrissey wants Australia to stop exporting meat: Moz wrote a letter to Barnaby Joyce, Australia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources, railing against the country’s (guess…) livestock industry. The singer requested that Joyce shut down the industry, which, well, let’s just say that wasn’t met too kindly. In a tweet, Joyce wrote, “Mightn’t be a big fan of The Smiths, but I am a great fan of families in WA, NT & FNQ who rely on our $2bn live export industry.” Yikes!
Morrissey announced to headline to play Riot Fest, says he isn’t, then does with a twist: In typical Moz fashion, after the spectacular Riot Fest bill was announced, it was then published that his Mozness wasn’t playing. When the bill was finally confirmed, in classic Morrissey fashion, the premises stopped cooking meat for two hours to respect the animal rights activist’s views. Going on, the set was reported as being alright, except that he was late for the performance. Classic Moz!
Moz talks smack about Trump and Clinton: Ah yes, it wouldn’t be an election without Moz chiming in. Bashing Donald Trump, the Los Angeles-dwelling singer entered into the political arena by stating:
“Donald Thump,, probably America's next President, reacts to the Orlando massacre by explaining how, if the people within the club were themselves armed with guns, then there would have been fewer casualties. This, of course, is his way of avoiding any words of support to the Orlando gay community (it is their own fault for going into a nightclub without hand grenades).”
Hillary Clinton wasn’t unscathed from his attacks. Morrissey described Clinton as “the face and voice of pooled money,” and she’d “repay the established elite with whatever they want if she is elected).”
But did he did support Bernie Sanders, calling him “so sane, so and intelligent and measured.” Ay caramba!
Morrissey supports the Brexit: Say what? That’s right, the leftist went against conventional wisdom by calling the UK’s vote to leave the EU, “magnificent.” Elaborating, Moz told Faster Louder that, “The British political class has never quite been so hopeless, but the same can be said for the USA. What has happened is that news media can no longer attach any nobility to old-style politics because although politicians do not and cannot change, the people the world over have changed.” You know Morrissey, never one to mince his words.
Morrissey accuses an immigration officer of stealing $150: Look, we hate going through immigration at LAX as much as the next person. But accusing them of stealing money? That’s plausible, but for being rude, c’mon Moz that may be a stretch. This is what the singer said about the alleged incident:
“It doesn’t take much to be thrown into a cell at LAX! You will notice that the Immigration Officers are persistently ordering you to “stand there,” which is a test to see if you will bow to their orders. If you say — as I did — “No. I’m perfectly OK where I am,” then they throw you into a cell for three hours because you are not frightened of them. They went through my belongings and took $150 out of my wallet; they kept the money and said “This is what saying ‘No’ has cost you” — which of course was illegal on their part. ?But they can? ?be as illegal as they wish.”
Moz writes eulogy for Prince, ends up bashing the royal family: This one is pretty self-explanatory. He calls Queen Elizabeth II “her Royal Slyness,” and elaborates by writing on his True to You site:
“Prince, who made something of his life as opposed to having fortune handed to him, is far more ‘royal’ than Elizabeth 2, and he will be mourned far more than she, for she could never make herself loveable, no matter how many paid and promoted non-stories flood the newspapers of the world.”
Guess who isn’t getting an invite to Buckingham Palace any time soon?
Basically, this just a ho-hum year in the life of Morrissey. See what he has to say about the election tomorrow night!
