Eat This Now: Ice Cream at Andrew's Ice Cream

As I write this, it is 11:15 p.m. and 78 degrees Fahrenheit. Southern California is in the grip of immensely powerful adiabatic winds, which is to say the Santa Anas are wreaking havoc, blowing garden furniture around and generally making life hell for allergy sufferers and truck drivers. In short, it's ice cream weather.

The temperature isn't expected to slide back toward normal winter temperatures anytime soon, which means you've got plenty of time to find Andrew's Ice Cream, a new shop hiding behind the Five Guys in Orange. Andrew, in case you're wondering, is the inspiration behind the venture, not the muscle; the happy man behind the counter is Greg Ramsay, a former healthcare administrator who likes dessert.

Ramsay started out with a full range of Thrifty ice cream and a few of his own flavors. Over the last three months, he has slowly been phasing out Thrifty as he replaces their tubs with his own homemade goodies. The homemade ice cream is excellent, creamy and rich without being overwhelming like American versions of gelato; there are no crystals from freezing and re-freezing. The service is warm and friendly, with generous scoops and samples to make sure you get the flavor you really want. That this is one of the only places in LA I can find maple walnut ice cream just makes it that much more endearing.

Andrew's Ice Cream, 1549 E. Katella Ave. #C, Orange; 714-829-9350; no website. Open daily 11 a.m.-9 p.m.
