Tricks or treats aren't the only things being given out for free Friday as Kino Lorber's new 4K restoration of Robert Wiene's classic horror thriller The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari will be available to stream at no cost–for one day only from San Francisco-based Fandor, which is, of course, normally a pay online subscription service.

Released in 1920, Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari (German title) is about a man whose investigation of his friend's murder leads him to suspect that the killer was a zombie-like sleepwalker under the hypnotic control of the diabolical Dr. Caligari.
“Caligari creates a mindscape, a subjective psychological fantasy. In this world, unspeakable horror becomes possible,” wrote Roger Ebert, adding “Caligari was the first true horror film.”
