Greg Long, OC Weekly People Issue Star, Wins Big Wave World Tour Crown

Greg Long, the San Clemente big wave rider who recently starred in OC Weekly's inaugural People Issue, has been crowned the winner in this year's Big Wave World Tour contest

The event, now in its fourth year, was cancelled after just three of five rounds (in Todos Santos, Baja California and Punto Lobos, Chile) because of a lack of large enough waves.
Long made it to the finals in all three contests, taking home a total of 2155.5 points, just over 1000 points ahead of runner-up Jamie Sterling of Hawaii, who took 1160.7. The rest of the runner-ups, in descending order were Carlos Burle of Brazil, Peter Mel and Ken Collins, (both USA) Gabriel Villaran of Peru, Zach Wormhoudt (USA), Ben Wilkinson (of Australia, Jose Gomez (Peru) Joao De Macedo (Portugal)  Ramon Navarro, (Chile) and Jeff Rowley (Australia).

Long got the award in a ceremony held in his hometown of San Clemente. Overall it's been a great season for him, especially given that it started out with a bad fall at Cortes Bank which kept him underwater for a series of three waves and nearly killed him. You can read more about that spectacular wipeout and Long's equally amazing recovery in our People Issue.
