One of our favorite comedy horror rock musicals, Little Shop of Horrors is the story of a young, naive flower shop assistant who cares for a blood-thirsty alien plant. It's a popular revival for eccentric theater companies around the country—after the successful 1982 Off-Broadway debut run, a Broadway show was proposed but writer Howard Ashman considered his dark little play a better fit for theater's back alleys, so to speak. Patterned after the 1960 black comedy film and pretty parallel to the Frank Oz 1986 film of the same name, Little Shop ranks among the favorite cultish, weird, comical stories to hit stage and screen. So, if mass amounts of carnage at the hands—er, vines, of an R&B singing monster plant sounds like fun, head over to the Long Beach Playhouse tonight.
