It’s not your picture perfect love story—but there’s plenty of mistaken identity, mobsters and cross-dressing. Who cares? It stars Marilyn Monroe. Released in 1959, Some Like It Hot was recently named by the American Film Institute as the greatest American comedy film of all time. The story takes place in Prohibition-era Chicago, and centers around two girl-crazy musicians played by Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon. Long story short: they both fall in love with Marilyn, end up in drag, make men fall in love with them and hilarity ensues. There’s even a spot-on Cary Grant impersonation involved. It’s romantic comedy before romantic comedy tried too hard. And way before the likes of Kate Hudson and Jennifer Aniston came along.
