Rough Drafts

Giving audiences a chance to become part of the play-writing process, the South Coast Repertory has been hosting “NewSCRipts”—a series of play readings by both established and emerging playwrights—since 1985. After each reading, patrons take part in a spirited discussion with the writer, offering valuable insight and feedback. And it looks like we have a lot of intelligent theater lovers in the area—plays chosen for the “NewSCRipts” series have scored six Pulitzer Prize nominations with Margaret Edson’s Wit winning the prize in 1999. The final reading of the season will take place this Monday with Julie Marie Myatt’s The Happy Ones , a tale of overcoming hardships, finding friendship and, most importantly, finding peace.
