Midnight Cowboy

The only X-rated film to ever win an Oscar, Midnight Cowboy captivated and shocked audiences when it was released in 1969. Granted, the MPAA ratings were much stricter back then (the rating was given at the advice of a psychiatrist due to graphic assault scenes), but this film is nowhere near the pornographic X ratings of today. Instead, it’s about a slightly naive man’s journey from small town to big city with the starry-eyed dream of becoming a male prostitute. After being conned, swindled and ending up homeless, main character Joe (played by Jon Voight) finally befriends crippled con man Ratso (a flawless Dustin Hoffman), and what started out as a coming-of-age drama turns into kind of a buddy flick.
