Every second and fourth Wednesday of the month, chef Dave Mau whips up a free meal for anybody and everybody who bothers to show up at the Memphis Santora. Why? It might be because Mau’s a nice guy, but who cares—it’s free and it’s delicious. While the dinners mostly attract the hipster sect and not, say, the homeless sect, the food is very much gourmet: No dry burgers and fries here, friends. Mau’s dishes have ranged from baked eggplant and peri-peri chicken—and he doesn’t forget dessert, either. How’s bananas foster sound? There’s even free entertainment to go with that free meal. in the past, Mau has invited local favorites like Satisfaction frontman Michael Rosas, Red Yellow Sparks and the New Limb to play some tunes as patrons chow down. This Wednesday’s event features Huntington Beach funk/rock/soul outfit—and 2009 OC Music Awards nominee—Humanlab. Sure beats that free taco coupon for Jack-in-the-Box, right?
