In an era of love and protest, a musical emerged on New York’s off-Broadway stage that would change the scope of musicals to come. Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical deals with issues of war resistance, long hair and free love told in true 1967 style. The story of a politically active group of hippies working to fight against the Vietnam War while living as bohemians in New York City, the rock musical defied convention with its use of profanity, illegal drugs, sexuality and nude scenes. Upon release, the play was considered so radical, in fact, that London had to wait until censorship laws were revoked before it could be shown there. And now, Hair is being produced in Orange County to the delight of nostalgic ex-hippie residents.
