Two Reasons to Be at House of Blues Tonight (Even If You Don't Like Jet)

Don't get me wrong, it's not that I have any specific gripes against the Melbourne-based rockers of Jet, except for maybe this photo. Any band that has managed to brave the music business in the heart of the download era for more than one album deserves a little credit. Plus, you know they're all famous and stuff so they're obviously doing something right for most of you. They just aren't my cup of tea.

But even if you side with me, there's no reason you should skip out on their show tonight at House of Blues in Anaheim. In fact, there are couple reasons you should go. Consider the opening bands who sound nothing like the headliner:

1) Paper Tongues: This Charlotte-based 8-piece is a definite departure from chord pumping rock generics, as evidence by dynamic rhythms and electric tinged soul of songs like “Trinity” and “For the People”. A potent mix dance beat synths and and alt rock power chords. With that many people on stage, it's almost impossible to put on an above average live show, so you can certainly look forward to a lot of high energy vibes. Listen here.

2) Hey Champ: You may or may not be familiar with their break out club hit Cold Dust Girl, which garnered some major praise from artists like Lupe Fiasco who treated this Chicago three-piece to an opening slot on his 2008 summer tour. Since then the group has maintained a constant surge of popularity among artists like Datarock and Sebastian Tellier. With a new album in the way, these guys are no slouches when it comes to peddling their MGMT-esque rock/pop swagger. Listen here.

And hey, if you ARE a Jet fan, then these bands are just icing on the cake. Though, you'll have to remember to keep your mind open and your dancing shoes laced tight. The show starts at 8 p.m. tonight at House of Blues Anaheim. Tickets are $22.50-$25. Enjoy.
