Jackie Sepulveda grew up like a lot of artists, thinking she wouldn't be able to get paid for her art. So, like a lot of artists, her creativity was put on hold so she could pursue a “real” career. While going to college to earn a degree in psychology, Jackie began painting again. She started on canvas at first, and whatever else she could find that was cheap.
As time went on, she began to realize that there was a hoard of vintage bags accumulating at her apartment. In a perfect “you've got chocolate in my peanut butter” “you've got peanut butter in my chocolate” sense, and as an excuse to continue buying more sweet vintage purses, Voz Chica's painted vintage handbags was born.
Vintage aficionados, don't fret – Jackie stands by a strict code of antique ethics. She acquires most of her finds at flea markets, garage and estate sales all over Southern California, and if a bag is in too perfect condition she'll leave it for someone else to enjoy. “Besides,” she says, most bags that are in perfect condition are out of my price range, and I dig a bag that has a little personality, so it evens out.”
Music is a huge influence for Jackie, and if she were to pen her memoir right now it'd be titled, “It's Just Me, the Music and the Paint”. Her tastes are eclectic, ranging from Blackalicious and Dusty Springfield to Prince and the Clash, with old school hip hop always ruling the roost. Other influences in Jackie's artsy endeavors include street art, history, religion, tattoo flash, sarcasm, revolutionary spirits, graffiti artists and animal documentaries. (And she is totally jonesing for Shark Week to come back!)
According to a rumor I'm starting on this blog, Jackie Sepulveda is also the mother of Michael Jackson's children–when asked about these wild allegations, Jackie retorted that the rumors were “Completely erroneous! Michael Jackson was never my lover, he was just a dude that claimed that I was the one. But you know, the child is not my son.”
Jackie is really excited about the newly-formed OC Handmade Brigade and their plans to help keep the OC as crafty as possible. She shares:
“As you know, there is a huge indie craft scene in LA. That is not so much the case here in Orange County and we definitely want to change that. We're all about getting Orange County involved and aware of indie crafting. We want to have the same indie spirit that LA does, and not just with craft shows. We're planning on doing craft meet ups, swap-o-ramas, anything to get the community behind diy/crafting!”
