Last night was a busy one for Orange County bands–Make Moon, the Growlers, the New Limb, Janu and the Whalesharks at the Yost Theater; the Union Line and Yellow Red Sparks at Detroit Bar; and the final night of Handsome G's residency at the Gypsy Lounge. We made it to the first two.

The Yost Theater continues to develop, evolving into the first-class venue that operations manager Dennis Lluy and booker Ashley Eckenweiler have been working towards. They've added red curtains around the perimeter, and track lighting around the stage and standing area–all new since the last time we were there in late July for the Colourist's EP release show. Growing like a Sea Monkey.
Argyle Smile opened the show, clearly pleased to be playing such a large, professional venue (who wouldn't be?). Talking to vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Dana Chambers after their set, she remarked that it was a surreal experience, given how they usually play small bar shows; particularly pleased about the sound system.
Following a reliably rousing set from South County's Janu and the Whalesharks, it was time to hustle over to Detroit Bar for Yellow Red Sparks, who haven't played locally in a while and had a couple of new songs to debut. One of them involved a ukulele. It was cool.
Yellow Red Sparks drummer Darren Goldstein shared that they're focusing on expanding their fanbase up in LA; their next show is in Los Angeles…County, specifically Alex's Bar in Long Beach, opening for Dusty Rhodes and the River Band.
The Union Line closed out the night, thanking the crowd for making it to Detroit on the same night as not only the packed Yost show but also a new episode of The Office (hey, some of us made it to both. And have DVRs). Sounds like the Union Line might have some cool band news coming up. Stay tuned.
