With our poison pens, shit-smelling sneers and anti-authoritarian upbringings, we here at Weekly Central can be pretty hard on our local police, expecting the same kind of perfection we employ doing our jobs uncov– . . .

Around 12:02 a.m.,
A Long Beach patrol officer heard gunshots and drove to a Mobil gas station at Pacific Coast Highway and Pacific Avenue, where a white man in his 60s had just shot a black man in his 30s, according to a statement from Lisa Massacani, the department's public information officer.

The man with the gun, noticing the cop car pulling up, fired twice, with one bullet hitting the windshield, another clipping the hood and both nearly striking the unidentified officer, reads the statement. Here is the full look:

Being fired upon led to two officers firing back at the gunman, who was taken down, police say. The shooting suspect and his target, both of whom were wounded in the upper body, were taken to a local hospital. Both were initially listed in
critical condition, but the 30-year-old was
pronounced dead several hours later.

The motive for the shooting is
unknown, and identities were being withheld pending more police investigation and the notification of next-of-kin. Anyone with information is asked to contact Long
Beach Police Homicide detectives Terri Hubert or Mark Bigel
at 562.570.7244. Anonymous tips may be submitted via text or web at www.tipsoft.com.

The Los Angeles County
District Attorney's office probe the officer-involved shooting, as is routine.
