Citing lack of bookings, United Airlines will end flights between Honolulu and John Wayne Airport starting Monday.
As one who used to be able to afford air travel to the Islands, I can say we used LAX more often than JWA because the fares were so much cheaper.
United actually inherited the route from Continental Airlines, which began the service in March 2010 before being swallowed up by United. Some previously booked Honolulu flights in June will push off. United already stopped flights between JWA and Kahului.
Travel experts believe United's move could open the cabin door for a smaller carrier to give Hawaiian service out of Santa Ana a go, although noise restrictions, which can translate to weight restrictions for some aircraft, could prove problematic.
