As I mentioned last week, I recently interviewed John Sedlar, the man behind the fantastic Rivera in Los Angeles and one of the icons of the Southwestern-cuisine movement during the 1980s, for my book on the history of Mexican cuisine in the United States (out Cinco de Mayo 2012!). Sedlar proved generous, well-spoken and a mensch. But when I asked him for his favorite restaurant in Orange County, I must admit, the answer surprised me.

Señor Pedro's Tacos in San Juan Capistrano? Home of the fried chicken burrito?
Actually, it's not much of a surprise. Sedlar spent years coordinating food events at Mission San Juan Capistrano, which is across the street from the iconic taquería. That relationship remains the only reason for Sedlar to venture into our fair county–the rest of the time, he's too busy reinventing a part of Latino cuisine for the second time in his life.
