Cars are sure to slow to a crawl around Euclid Street and Cerritos Avenue in Anaheim tonight. That’s where the Anaheim Police Department Traffic Unit is setting up a DUI/driver’s license checkpoint from 8 p.m. – 3 a.m. Police assure that any inconvenient delays for motorists will be brief, that is if officers don’t suspect a driver of being well oiled from hooch.
If a cop detects signs of impairment from alcohol or other drugs, specially trained officers will take over for further evaluation.
Anaheim PD deems DUI checkpoints a “proven resource” with regards to reducing the number of fatal and injurious traffic collisions. Police encourage folks to designate a driver or call a cab if going out and getting sloshed is on the social itinerary for tonight. If not, drivers risk severe consequences if caught under the influence at the checkpoint: jail time, fines, fees and classes that can total more than $10,000.
Not to mention the embarrassment of friends and family once they find out, police add.
Now, in PBS voice: funding for tonight’s DUI checkpoint in Anaheim is brought to you by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
