[UPDATE: Ecstasy & Alcohol?] Amy Winehouse Confirmed Dead, Joins 27 Club as Self-Fulfilling Prophecy

UPDATE, 6:28 P.M., JULY 23, 2011: It seems tabloid newspaper Sunday Mirror will report in tomorrow's issue that Amy Winehouse passed away after an ecstasy and alcohol binge. See the front page image after the jump.

ORIGINAL POST, 9:58 A.M., JULY 23, 2011: TMZ confirms that singer Amy Winehouse, 27, was found dead at her home in London.

The British singer-songwriter, known for her powerful torch singing, broke onto the scene in 2003, but became a household name in 2006 with her album Back to Black, which won five Grammys.  The album was the third biggest seller of the
2000s in the United Kingdom.

A press release from the London Police says “Police were called by
London Ambulance Service to an address in Camden Square NW1 shortly
before 16.05hrs today, Saturday 23 July, following reports of a woman
found deceased.

On arrival officers found the body of a 27-year-old female who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Enquiries continue into the circumstances of the death. At this early stage it is being treated as unexplained.”

Born on Sept. 14, 1983, Winehouse's battles with substance abuse and mental health issues have been widely publicized. She had just canceled her European tour last month, shortly after a
perfomance in Serbia showed her performing in a daze.

Winehouse's death at 27 makes her the newest member of the 27 club, joining Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison.

In 2008 her former assistant Alex Haines revealed that Winehouse was afraid of what just happened. “She reckoned she would join the 27 Club of rock stars who died at that age. She told me, 'I have a feeling I'm gonna die young.'”

Celebrities took to Twitter to express shock and condolences; Joel Madden tweeted a photo with a caption, “Rest in Peace Amy. Your Voice will live Forever.”

QTip said, “The last time I spoke 2 amy I told her let her light shine more.”

Ricky Martin said, “i just found out. I feel pain. I feel anger. Rest beautiful girl rest. You are free! #RIPAMY”

JD Harmeyer, Howard Stern's producer, tweeted, “'She should have said YES to rehab' – the tweet/joke that will annoy everyone today.” It's a sentiment that DJ Samantha Ronson, sister of Winehouse's producer Mark, derided via Twitter, saying, “I'm not sure how anyone with a soul can make jokes about the passing of one of the most talented artists this generation will see.”
