Underground hip hop trio CunninLynguists (Kno, Deacon the Villain, and Natti) from Lexington, Kentucky has been creating the most interesting worlds with every album they’ve released since 2000. The world in Strange Journey Volume Three (2014), for instance, is an 18-track journey through a strange universe made up with robots, drum beats, and samples of acoustic pop, blues, and jazz melodies. The approach the group took on this album is a streamlined version of the kind they’ve taken on previous albums like Southernunderground (2010) and Oneirology (2011), both of which stand as audible forms of modern art that have cohesive visual and musical identities. Naturally, CunninLynguists’ ability to execute clear creative visions is what helped them attract the attention of Kanye West, Pharrell, and Cee-Lo Green, who are few of the high profile names they’ve collaborated with.
