ORIGINAL POST, AUG. 21, 6:01 A.M.: In partnership with the California Office of Traffic Safety's “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign that runs through Labor Day, the Garden Grove Police Department is putting extra patrols out tonight, Saturday night and the following Saturday night, Aug. 29.
The department also announced its next sobriety checkpoint will be next Friday, Aug. 28. The Weekly will provide more details on that operation next week.
Law enforcement across the county and state are increasing anti-DUI enforcement because 38 percent of crash fatalities happen over Labor Day weekend, according to the Office of Traffic Safety.
That state office is touting its DDVIP (Designated Driver VIP) mobile app that is now available for free download on iOS and Android devices. Launched last year, the app allows users to “Map a Spot” from their current location to DDVIP partner bars and restaurants throughout California that offer free incentives to designated drivers. The app also links users who will imbibe to sober rides from Uber, Lyft or Curb.
Garden Grove Police anti-DUI ops are funded by California Office of Traffic Safety grants, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
