A Eulogy for Taco Bell's Breakfast Waffle Taco

By now, you've probably heard that Taco Bell has killed off its breakfast waffle taco in favor of a new biscuit taco debuting today. Let us now take a moment and remember how horrible the little greasy thing was, but ultimately, how important it was to the growing fast food breakfast wars.

Honestly, the Waffle Taco was a horrible idea. First off, there was no easy way to eat it. No matter how hard Taco Bell tried, they couldn't get a waffle to fold perfectly. The filling would fall out. Maple syrup came separate, and no matter how hard you tried, there was no way to eat it without getting everything sticky (Why didn't they just infuse the waffle with it like a McGriddle?). Even if you got into your mouth with one piece, it'd still leave your fingers horrible greasy.

And even if it made it in your mouth, nothing about it was appealing (for more, see our original review). It was ugly. The waffle had no texture. It wasn't big enough. You couldn't eat it on the go. The eggs looked and tasted very ehhh, and everything was just the worst.

It's not surprise that Taco Bell is ditching it for a biscuit taco filled again with breakfast fixings (or fried chicken). But as much as a biscuit taco makes more sense (biscuits shouldn't be oily and actually have texture, for one and two), there are just some things it won't be able to replace. Because, really, the Waffle Taco did a few very specific parts of its job perfectly.

It helped Taco Bell usher in its breakfast menu, which does actually have some very good standouts (the breakfast crunch wrap is nearing Egg McMuffin territory). It built hype, and taught fast food how to be Instagram-friendly in its food and packaging. It was the thing that got people the most excited about fast food in, well, as long as I can remember.

So, so long Waffle Taco. I didn't really like you, but I was glad you existed.
