Long Beach and Orange County bands aren't the only locals headed to the cheerfully soul-trying SXSW music-biz death march in Austin this week. 562-ers Alex's Bar and owner Alex Hernandez will be teaming up for a Friday day party with Dragons' frontman Mario Escovedo's Requiemme Management and Booking as well as with Bar Pink–the San Diego venue run by John Reis, the local-ish legend behind Rocket From The Crypt/Drive Like Jehu/Swami Records/Hot Snakes-and-more–and Ontario, Canada, bar Call The Office, which must surely be a special place to keep this kind of company.
“It just seemed natural to team up with Mario and Alex on something like this,” says Reis. “There is a lot of history there, both personally and professionally. RFTC and the Dragons both came up together in the San Diego music scene of the '90s. There have also been parallels between Bar Pink and Alex's Bar, as we end up having many of the same band routing through both clubs. We even had a night at Pink where both Mario's and Alex's bands–MEX and Los Mysteriosos, respectively–shared a bill.”

And that doesn't even mention Hernandez' longtime tradition of special
barbeques for Reis' visiting bands! The line-up will win over anyone
who's got a favorite barstool at Alex's: the re-united Bomp! punkers
the Zeros, a rare appearance by high-energy soul 'n' roll band the
Bellrays, San Diego funk/soul combo Lady Dottie and the Diamonds and
more still making themselves known at press time. It all starts at 2 PM
this Friday at 403 E. 6th Street at the Aquarium–more info at requiemme.com.
