Grand Central Art Center's “Souped Up” pays tribute to one of the most recognizable components of Southern California culture: the custom car. Some of the best-known airbrush artists, pinstripers (you know, the guys who create those swirly, tribal-like line designs on motorcycles, cars, and even trucks and surfboards) who have taken part in the creation of the phenom have come together for the exhibit: Steve Vandemon, Doug Dorr, Jimmy C., “Scratch,” Lux Deville and many more. The appeal of the custom car goes hand-in-hand with the lowbrow-art movement that's also been met with much positive response from the average denizen-so who needs art critics?
