It's blues, spiritual and gospel music choreographed by a modern American dance company with a mostly African-American cast and without all the shenanigans of high street ballet—and we're not talking about any of the wannabe reality dance competitions. The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater combines music of the slaves with colorful costumes to deliver the performance of a lifetime. From their exquisite physiques and fast-paced movements mixed with a brilliant employment of light and dark backgrounds, the group's intriguing story-lines render many speechless. The dance company returns to Segerstrom Hall under new artistic director Robert Battle to perform its own classics as well as new dance numbers. Be sure to get out and appreciate the vision of the great (if not the greatest) African American dancer and pioneer Alvin Ailey.
