We all know the story: an evil sorceress curses a princess to sleep for 100 years, and the only thing that can wake her? True love’s kiss. No, this isn’t another scene from Disney’s Enchanted, but it’s got the same amount of magic. American Ballet Theatre is bringing beautiful extensions and arabesques to the stage at Segerstrom Hall, where principal dancers like Diana Vishneva and Gillian Murphy will be switching off the role of the sleeping princess. Misty Copeland – ABT’s first African-American soloist in two decades –will also be part of the cast. One thing’s for sure, there will be much to marvel at: the scenery and sparkly costumes designed by Tony-Award-recipient Richard Hudson; the dancers’ succinct pirouettes to Tchaikovsky’s waltzes; and, finally, the Pacific Symphony’s electrifying live rendition of the ballet’s score.
