UPDATE, SEPT. 2, 3:56 P.M.: The Orange County Sheriff's Department just announced that it, too, is running a checkpoint from 7 tonight through 3 a.m. Saturday somewhere in Lake Forest. Besides the checkpoint at Cerritos and State College, Anaheim police say they'll be running saturation patrols this weekend and next weekend.
ORIGINAL POST, SEPT. 2, 6:04 A.M.: Many Orange County law enforcement agencies have sent word about increased anti-DUI enforcement over the long holiday weekend, but so far only the Anaheim and Buena Park police departments have announced checkpoints for tonight.
Buena Park's runs from 7 p.m. through 3 a.m. at the intersection of Beach Boulevard and Stanton Avenue, according to BPPD.
Anaheim's starts an hour later (8 p.m.) but ends at the same time at State College Boulevard and Cerritos Avenue (so be careful hitting those craft breweries, kiddies!).
Besides revealing that it will send out “saturation patrols” tonight, the Tustin Police Department announced it will conduct a checkpoint on Sept. 16. We'll have more details on that one closer to the date.
Saturation patrols are manned by officers hitting the streets to specifically look for drunk or drugged drivers. They generally concentrate on areas known for DUI stops, arrests, wrecks, injuries and/or deaths.
Most Orange County police departments have partnered with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for the high-visibility enforcement campaign Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over, which began Aug. 19 and continues through late Monday night.
Funding for anti-DUI enforcement comes from California Office of Traffic Safety grants, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
