There hasn’t been a new release from Animal Collective this year, but that doesn’t mean the band hasn’t been busy—they might not be touring new music, but they’re still deeply submerged in the sounds of several generations of undergrounds, and the DJ sets they do are the kind of rare events that are as exciting as they are educational. The set they did this May at Los Globos in L.A. is viciously traded online, and indicates the sort of unexpected directions the AnCo DJ sets are known for—prepare for a world tour via krautrock, Nederpop, Turkish psych, various degrees of minimal synth and an endlessly propulsive rhythm linking several genres and generations. It’s not a new album, but it’ll give you plenty of new albums to go look for on your own.
