Picnic takes us back to those heady pre-9/11, pre-border-fence days when a strapping young stranger could ride into a small Midwestern town in a boxcar, steal the heart of the local beauty, and then hightail it out of there as fast as he'd arrived without attracting the attention of the federal government. Times may have changed, but William Inge's play remains a classic portrayal of repressed Midwestern small-town lust in the '50s, before Elvis taught teenagers what sex was.
