Their sonar-style talent for finding insects at sundown out in our local canyons. Need answers to other batty interrogatives? Fans of the Mexican free-tailed and a half-dozen other bat species living in the Santa Ana Mountains—some roosting under a bridge on Santiago Canyon Road—can support the work of the Tucker Wildlife Sanctuary, a project of CSU Fullerton, and meet batmen and batwomen who study, revere and teach others about these odd critters, so darn ugly they're beautiful. Carve a pumpkin, take a wagon ride, buy a hot dog, hear a naturalist talk batty and you try—we dare you—to catch an insect by yelling at it in the dark.
