The National Union of Healthcare Workers (NUHW) is gaining new members in hospital halls all across OC, and the effort isn’t just growing the ranks, but also flexing strength. After hosting an informational picket outside Fountain Valley Regional Hospital, the largest for-profit facility of its kind in OC, the union broke through a months-long impasse and won a new contract this year with pay raises for its workers. But the struggle didn’t end there. Dozens donned red NUHW shirts and walked the picket lines soon after, this time against Sodexo, a corporation the hospital subcontracts its food and housekeeping staff with. NUHW also managed to beat back a nasty union-busting campaign in June at West Anaheim Medical Center, adding more workers to its membership rolls in the process.
