Bird Mad Girl cover Supergrass but make it sound like the Pagans or the Sonics—and when they do their own song “Psycho” they make it sound like post-Mutantes Brazil fuzz-guitar bananas. (Incidentally, you can pick up the recent Brazilian Guitar, Fuzz Bananas compilation from Stones Throw.) But the band is also part John Reis rock, part ’78 punk and part ’68 primitivism—and in total, a band with sophistication and promising songwriting battling up through velocity and volume. Spanish lyrics and plenty of effects add up to make their best work: quick, catchy and weighted heavily enough to crack concrete. Like Manhattan Murder Mystery, they’re probably the best kind of hell at a house party.
